We are an online store providing top class jaffles to the residents of the City of Welkom in the Free State province of the Republic of South Africa.
What is a jaffle?
The Australians claim that an Australian by the name of Dr Ernest E Smithers invented and patented the jaffle iron in 1949. However I recall my mother making jaffles during my preteen years. Given the timeline it would have predated the registration of this patent.
Disregarding all this, we South Africans, believe that the original idea originates in South Africa. In any event the lowly jaffle has been a firm favourite for many of us.
The jaffle iron, the utensil used to produce the jaffle, was once referred to as a "pressure toaster. Once the bread with the required filling is placed in the jaffle iron the edges of the bread are pressed together, sealing the edges making as it were, a pie.
The fillings for the jaffle are endless. Imagine a filling and it can be used. I have been making a "spaghetti bolognaise" jaffle for sometime. I have now learned that in 1950 grocers were advertising a "Edgell Bologanaisse(sic) mince beef and spaghetti" jaffle.
We are now offering a selection of both savoury as well as sweet jaffles. As time goes by we will increase our menu.
